A true people pleaser of a wine, Albariño is complex, aromatic and tasty, a perfect fit for the Charleston food scene.

Rías Baixas makes some of the world’s most elegant white wines. The wine region occupies a lush green corridor of northwest Spain on the cool, Atlantic coast, an area known as Galicia. Ample rainfall makes it tough to ripen reds but suits the white Albariño grape to perfection. Local growers have mastered the art of growing their superstar varietal— the wines are crisp, light, and fresh, with hints of sea spray and minerality that pair beautifully with the seafood dishes of the region. A true people pleaser of a wine, Albariño is complex, aromatic and tasty, a perfect fit for the Charleston food scene.

Charleston shares an Atlantic coastline with Rías Baixas, and it’s no surprise that local somms love the variety with everything from land and sea. Beverage Director Brandon Underwood of Estadio Charleston appreciates the versatility of Albariño and likes its “refreshing oceanic brightness with different levels of salinity.” Like many around town, he finds that Albariño wines are “at home in coastal Charleston.” Keep it local and head over to Estadio Charleston this month to try a line-up of Albariño from Rías Baixas with their lively Spanish food. Bodegas La Caña

Bodegas La Caña is located in the Valley of Salnés, Rías Baixas’ first sub-region, known for its classic coastal influences. A benchmark style, mineral-driven and sea-salty, balanced by rich flavors of ripe citrus.

Lagar de Cervera

100% Albariño grapes sourced from the warmer sub-regions of O Rosal and Cambados, Lagar de Cervera delivers pronounced aromas of golden apples, ripe pears, and pineapple. Full-bodied and rich, pair with grilled calamari or paella.

Lagar de Cervera, Pazo de Seoane

A blend of local varieties, 60% Albariño from the southern O Rosal area with Caiño Blanco, Loureiro, and Treixadura. Clean and bright with notes of jasmine and honeysuckle, the wine finishes long and elegant with a savory side that pairs with many dishes.
