Estadio Charleston: Spanish Flare on S.C. Coast
Popular Washington D.C. restaurant Estadio D.C. opened its second location in downtown Charleston. The restaurant, owned by Max Kuller, serves Spanish food with a focus on the Basque region; Estadio Charleston will dish up favorites like paella, as well as various small plates and pintxos, or snacks.
“We’ll be celebrating a lot of seafood and local vegetables coming from around here, which is going to be a major difference from the flagship in D.C. because we have a lot of access to farms and fish,” says Executive Chef Alex Lira, previously of Bar Normandy.
In addition to seafood and fresh, seasonal vegetables, the restaurant will incorporate a robust gin program, a beverage central to the cocktail culture of Spain.
Estadio Charleston aims to transport diners to Basque Country. The design is open, with high ceilings and a lot of metal and wood. The restaurant will have a laid-back atmosphere, intended to encourage good times and good conversation.
“Come with a small group of friends. Order as many small plates as possible so you can taste as much as possible,” Lira says. “If you see a whole fish on the menu, that’s an amazing way to eat and really lets you know where you are.”
